Huaycal Engineer

A personal project, Huaycal Engineering is a featherbrained humor youtube project I made with some friends. Huaycal Engineer Vol. 1 was the song for it, this is the album cover graphic; something quick & fun using India ink and calligraphy pens.

FYPM, Spazz, Roksnax and more

I made a video for a song on this release ‘Chico Song’:

We debuted these songs on our East Coast tour, our next show is in Burnt Ramen in Richmond California, it’s probably the last Los Huaycos show of 2016. There’s a couple different fliers for this same show floating around but this is the one I made:

Los Huaycos, Generacion Suicida, Remnants and more Nov. 12th 2016 at Burnt Ramen flier

Currently working with BBTAD on the Roksnax compilation reissue with Samurai, Hollow Ground and Saracen. Love how ancient we’re making this look!

I’m happy with the layout on this but it was really a group effort. We had it printed as a 2 color at Econopress in Oakland; released on our drummers tape label, Pfantone Labs, cover art by Andrei Bouzikov.

NWN projects and new Danzig flier

Nuclear War Now! Productions recent projects

A photo of care package of some of the more recent projects I have worked on for NWN! Prod. Including Hadez from Peru 3xLP box set four demos ranging from 86-92. Martire LP/CD. Carpathian Forest demos LP. Revenge LP. Blasphemophager picture disc LP.

danzig-ghoul-warfield-haloweenshow2013

This is the latest flier I have made, for Danzig and Ghoul at the Warfield. This was a collaboration with Tankcrimes direction, he picked out the old horror movie screen shot. We had never made a flier for Danzig so we were taking it back to the early 90’s and 80’s—all black and white cut and paste style, charge by phone info included and no URL’s (oh woops! just noticed the .com on the AXS logo). Stoked for our friends from Ghoul to be playing this show.

Some of the old black and white Samhain and Misfits fliers were really classic, one with the Necros comes to mind. Also old Goldenvoice fliers / two color posters, the one Otis & Biscuits made for Venom, Exodus & Hirax is awesome, 625 Thrashcore hooked me up with that one a while back.

Spazz LP's La Revancha and Dwarf Jester Rising

I also recently received a care package from 625 Thrashcore for both of these projects. SpazzLa Revancha‘ and ‘Dwarf Jester Rising‘, these look fantastic. La Revencha is on screen printed chip board by Monolith Press, we are currently working on another re-issue of that with reverse board and two spot colors from Pirates Press.

Wreck – Renacer: Discografía 1996-2000

Wreck was a band that we (Asmereir) used to share the stage and hang out with with from 1996-98; in Barranco and Monterrico, mostly, among other places in Lima. There’s a special place in my heart with this release because of that. Cuaderno Roto  is co-releasing this with a couple other labels as a digi-pack. It’s a compilation of demo tapes from that era when we hung out and from some of their later stuff from when I had already moved to SF.

After 11 years of not playing they are having a reunion show, we are all hoping the digipack comes out in time for the show!  They are also playing another show opening for Lag Wagon.

This is the flier art Robert Ojeda created for their headlining reunion show:

AFICHE-ORIGINAL-robert_ojeda

I really liked this reunion show flier design and illustration Robert came up with so I asked the label if we can get permission to use his artwork. They got in touch and gave it a go. I decided to reiterate that for the CD cover, since there was no other cover art, or good scans of the original releases provided. I think it works and this looks 90’s skateboard punk-o-rama style as Wreck asked!

Here is the cover I came up with using Roberts artwork:

Wreck Renacer - Digipack portada

We decided to use the bands original logo rather than a typeface for the cover.

We had to rush the layout on this release so that it would hopefully be out in time for the shows. There was no time for review with the band; hopefully it’s all good!

Pagan Altar reissue

Buried by Time and Dust brothers do it again! The Pagan Altar “Mythical and Magical” LP I helped with got record of the week over at Pirates Press. I guess you can’t go wrong with awesome doom metal, a massive medieval deco style foil-stamp, deboss and tip-on jacket!

Hope I get to see and listen to this in person one day.

Short Fast and Loud #27

Short Fast and Loud is an annual zine that I have been helping out for a while now. This years issue features Acrostix from Japan on the cover. Articles on Infest and Backslider.

Just started working on this last night so this is a work in progress. Photo by Rafa “Misoshiru of Death”

Normal show flyer hitting the streets, Ghoul “Transmission Zero”…

Normal Show at Sub Mission Gallery. This is for an upcoming Ceremony hardcore / punk / experimental show in San Francisco. I worked on this with direction from Ryan Brundage from Geldings. Printed at Econopress. We made this a 2 color job. Sort of a collage of some of the bands’ logos over a green some Ceremony t-shirt artwork.

Ghoul “Transmission Zero” is out now and shipping from Tankcrimes Records. Here is the printed gatefold LP cover after some color correction that I talked about in a previous post. The die-hard version of this comes with 3D glasses.

Here is the blue vinyl with the gatefold open behind it. We updated the traditional Ghoul center labels for this LP and used spot silver.

This was my favorite part to work on. I created this vector design with the supervision of Shaun “Digestor” McGrath. Trigonometrical fun, psychedelia and metal.

The back of the LP was influenced by a variety of old, very old records.

Saint Vitus “Die Healing” on Buried by Time and Dust with the Japanese style obi that wraps all the way around the jacket. This record has been spinning on my turntable frequently lately so I decided to make a post about it even though it came out a while back.

We worked on this late 2009 and it came out February 2010. I am really glad I was able to receive a copy from the label since it sold out very quickly. Die Healing was released on CD in 1995. It was never originally released on vinyl. This edition consists of 500 Black and 500 Green copies with embossed / cmyk+silver cover and booklet which includes lyrics, reviews and a forward by Dave Chandler himself.

Here it is featured with the Japanese style obi taken off.

We kept the labels simple for this release.

24 x 12 insert. For the cover we used an image that was used on the cd. Silver on the logo. One of my favorite methods that we used for this part of the layout was that instead of blurring the image to come up with a grayscale or cmyk image we opted to blow it up as is and keep the original halftone dots; pure black and white to avoid moiré.

The outcome gives halftone dots an organic natural rawness, perfect for Vitus.

The inside of the gatefold insert.

Thanks, up the punks!

P.S. on a side note anyone else notice how thrash metal came back a few years ago but (almost?) everyone seemed to forget the rototoms? If you don’t know what I mean listen to the first second and a half of Kreators’ ‘Pleasure to Kill’ and Possessed ‘Burning in Hell’ 0:15-0:17.

Night Fever LP CASSETTE / Obsessor CASSETTE / Cannabis…

Probably the highest profile job that has most recently come out that I was a part of in the layout / design was the Cannabis Corpse Beneath the Grow Lights Thou Shalt Rise LP/CD on Tankcrimes. Crazy concept from the band with art by Andrei Bouzikov, logo by Barf. Check it out:

Listen to a track here.

Some other cool new stuff going on at Tankcrimes that I had the pleasure to work on was the screen printed jacket for Night Fever, here is the mock up:

And then the actual screen print photo, printed on chipboard, 3 up, uncut:

Insert here, pretty much exactly as they sent it with a minor text addition and some pre-press work:

The cassette version of the Night Fever folded out, pretty much just reiterated the LP insert to fit in a cassette J-card; along with the Obsessor tape cover, (logo by Sean McGrath art by Andrei Bouzikov):

Another amazing project that recently came out that was awesome to work on was the Conqueror box set. The packaging here is insane, definitely first time for a metal box made in china for me. They are a brutal Black Metal band from Canada, this amazing release is on Nuclear War Now! productions:

I also helped out with the layout of the regular version of this and the CD. To check out more pictures of this awesome project click here.

To order it from NWN click here.

Another recent project which is totally killer with Nuclear War Now was the Abigail LP / CD The Lord Satan.

This should be out now too so check out the NWN store to purchase it soon too, cheers!

Give Praise Enter button / Volture site / Asta…

Volture site (custom WordPress template):

Fucking Volture bro! The website is done, check it out. They had a really rad site designed by Nathcore who rules but they needed something that they could easily update so I offered to make them a wordpress powered site. I am happy to say they are really stoked on their new site and that they have been updating it pretty frequently! This band kicks ass.

http://volture.us/

So the LP layout for the Belgian hardcore band Reproach is finally done! That is exciting stuff! It turned out really cool with sweet Andrei Bouzikov artwork on the cover and back. Next up on the agenda is the CD version, which is basically the same deal but it will include a Japanese translation of the lyrics. Pretty awesome. The CD will be out on Crew For Life from Japan and the LP on Deep Six Records.

I have also been working diligently with the legendary hardcore power violence band Spazz on their La Revancha re-issue. This will be screen printed with white and black ink on chip board which will turn out really classy. Martyrdod are some sick d-beat crusters from Sweden. I just sent off the separations for the screen printed cover of their new album Sect. This is another black and white ink on chip board adventure which is gonna be awesome. It is the Prank Records US edition to be printed over at Monolith Press. There will also be an offset full color version with gatefold covers and insert, so rad!

Do you love 80’s Swedish punk? Get stoked dude because a couple of weeks ago I finished designing the Asta Kask reissues on Prank Records! One of the things I designed is a collection of the 7″ box set. We went for an “ancient” look on these, to try to make them look as much as possible like the original seven inches. We even went as far as designing two color covers (instead of cmyk) and black ink on colored paper for the center labels. My favorite part was redesigning the labels to create the illusion of utmost authenticity.

For example this original was on Pang:

Here’s the redone one on Prank records:

Give Praise Records ‘Enter’ animated gif, Paul changes his site layout pretty frequently so it might be gone by now, it may also make a come back at any given time:
